An Organization Known As The Comanche Club - 1838 Words

IN 1928, when I was nine, I belonged, with maximum esprit de corps, to an organization known as the Comanche Club. Every schoolday afternoon at three o clock, twenty-five of us Comanches were picked up by our Chief outside the boys exit of P. S. 165, on 109th Street near Amsterdam Avenue. We then pushed and punched our way into the Chief s reconverted commercial bus, and he drove us (according to his financial arrangement with our parents) over to Central Park. The rest of the afternoon, weather permitting, we played football or soccer or baseball, depending (very loosely) on the season. Rainy afternoons, the Chief invariably took us either to the Museum of Natural History or to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Saturdays and most†¦show more content†¦The Chief always found us.) In his hours of liberation from the Comanches, the Chief was John Gedsudski, of Staten Island. He was an extremely shy, gentle young man of twenty-two or -three, a law student at N.Y.U., and altogether a very memorable person. I won t attempt to assemble his many achievements and virtues here. Just in passing, he was an Eagle Scout, an almost-All-America tackle of 1926, and it was known that he had been most cordially invited to try out for the New York Giants baseball team. He was an impartial and unexcitable umpire at all our bedlam sporting events, a master fire builder and extinguisher, and an expert, uncontemptuous first-aid man. Every one of us, from the smallest hoodlum to the biggest, loved and respected him. The Chief s physical appearance in 1928 is still clear in my mind. If wishes were inches, all of us Comanches would have had him a giant in no time. The way things go, though, he was a stocky five three or four--no more than that. His hair was blue-black, his hair-line extremely low, his nose was large and fleshy, and his torso was just about as long as his legs were. In his leather windbreaker, his shoulders were powerful, but narrow and sloping. At the time, however, it seemed to me that in the Chief all the most photogenic features of Buck Jones, Ken Maynard, and Tom Mix had been smoothly

Position Essay Should Downloading Music Be Legal Example For Students

Position Essay: Should Downloading Music Be Legal? The last 22% of those surveyed buy approximately 36% of Cads, the highest percentage within a given group. In other words: all those attempts by the recording industry to stop music downloads is in fact the cause of declining sales. The recording industry is shooting itself in the foot by eliminating file sharing programs. The rise of Anapest and the peer to peer (POP) file sharing programs enable people all over the world to share music for free. In my opinion, shutting down the file sharing networks is the stupidest thing they could do. Furthermore, with all this hype bout suing Anapest and other such program manufacturers, the ARIA is denying the public from receiving factual information. I agree to the general downloading of music by the public, since far from destroying the industry, they in fact increase sales. I dont believe downloading a couple of amps falls into the category of theft or piracy. Stupid as it may seem, the record companies do. They reason that if you download even one song, youre classified the same as if you downloaded hundreds of songs. I dont like it when I see advertisements for bootlegs and pirated movies and such. However, it is hard for me to not feel sympathetic to them when I see garbage music selling for about twenty dollars each. What really drives me crazy is that these artists are making millions of dollars a year, and they still feel the need to overcharge for a lousy CD. I have bought many albums, only to find that there are only one or two really good songs and the rest is trash. Understandably, this issue raises many questions among users of this system. What exactly is the definition of stealing here? Does mere possession of the song without paying for it become classified as theft? Ultimately, does downloading songs without paying take money away from the people who made them? The NARDS claims that downloading music is not only hurting sales; it is destroying the music industry. However, many believe that this totally false. The fact is, most people are downloading because they want a particular song, or because what they programs like Anapest create publicity for artists. The only way to ensure any success is exposure. People cant buy an album if they dont know it exists. Regarding exposure, many advocates for the recording industry argue that if anything, it makes the problem worse. If someone suddenly finds out about a new band by downloading other songs, he will merely have to download he songs of this new band instead of buying the CD. This will lead to a chain effect, and result in consumers killing sales, and driving up the price. What does not make sense is the position of the ARIA. They claim that the people who are downloading songs like crazy are together taking away legitimate sales of music. If, according to them, people are in fact downloading this amount, it would mean that they are spending twelve hours a day downloading, with no time to eat, work or do anything but download and sleep. Furthermore, not many individuals can afford a TTL line, although there are the few people who download thousands of songs, they also hold the highest percentage of music sales. If downloading was the cause for the decrease in music sales, then the percentage difference would be much, much greater. This is not to say that there are no freeloaders. In fact, there is a not so insignificant portion of consumers who download tons of music and rarely ever buy it. The ARIA reports that last year, Over 50 percent of those music fans that have downloaded music for free have made copies of it This number is up from only 3% from two years ago. .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70 , .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70 .postImageUrl , .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70 , .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70:hover , .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70:visited , .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70:active { border:0!important; } .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70:active , .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70 .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u765dcb21a4cc30333d53a6efcadc5f70:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Benefits Of Music Education Essay PaperHowever, even with increased buying from music consumers, general sales dropped about 15% from 2002. This is due largely to the recent economic recession, but partly also to the success of video and DVD entertainment, as well as to the increased usage of videotapes. When the lawsuit of the ARIA vs.. Anapest first came to public attention, I felt that even though many people were using Anapest, the label companies involved in the suit were correct in trying to prevent what could easily doom the entire industry. Since then, I have come across reports and such that tell a better story than the ARIA. The record industry claims that illegal downloading of music was the sole cause for the drop in sales. The truth of the matter is that most of the hardcore downloaded are in fact responsible for the highest percentage of music sales. I agree that it might not be ethically or morally right to download songs without paying for it, however I cannot Justify charging fifteen dollars for a single CD. If I am forced to make a choice between overspending and downloading free, I would probably choose to download. This is not to say that downloading is morally right. To take something which is not ours comes under the category of stealing; however, Just making a copy may be entirely different. In a situation such as this, where the moral battleground becomes a gray blur instead of clearly defined black or white, it is hard to make a complete stand. However, as much as I argue against it, I cant deny that downloading can be extremely useful. Being that the ARIA and other such groups have been trying to deny us correct information statistics, I make my stand as a pro-downloaded. -Full credit for this essay must go to Y. In several series certain body part were been exposed and the network has to blur the imagines out to prevent viewers from seeing explicit content. These network that broadcast these shows knowing that sex sell and they promotes it in there ads leading up to each episode. These girls act this way to stay on the show. Several contestant after leaving the show have gain fame and fortune. Some have launch careers in acting. Tiffany Pollard also known as Miss New York have gotten acting career an started her own reality show. Another contestant got her singing and modeling career after Flavor of love show ended. Some of these girls are from poor background and they been given the opportunity of a life time to change their circumstance. With financial stability they can help their family and relatives. Thats one advantage of coming on the show. A lot of ladies try to get on television to publicize themselves. They are trying to get a jump start on certain career they want to pursue. They are trying to get famous from these reality shows. Most of the time when these shows end some girls might get picked up for a spin off and get their own show. This irresponsibility can also lead to unwanted pregnancy. Young men watching this show get so fascinated and want to live the same kind of life style they see on television. They try to emulate these characters behavior . In my opinion reality television has a negative impact on our society it does not portrait anything positive. Even though some contestant got great opportunity from the show. The overall view is they have to demean themselves to get where they are. Does going on these show really worth ones morality to gain fame and fortune. Getting famous has become easy for everyone all they have to do is go on a reality television show and whoever behave the worst is the most popular. Statistic shows that they are the most watch series and they draws viewers from all different ages. Some might view these shows as been harmless and entertaining. I dont think they are harmless because young children emulate what they see on television. In their eyes its okay because some one else is doing it.

Hume skeptical doubts essays

Hume skeptical doubts essays It is said that wisdom is a product of experience. The human consciousness uses experience to identify situations and formulate connections between action and consequence. When observing a young child it is obvious that they lack the experience necessary to predict the outcome of their actions. They are novice to the world and have yet to undergo the experiences necessary to develop the ability to connect consequence to action. The philosopher David Hume in his book, An Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding, addresses these skeptical doubts. In the text Hume sets out to establish what the reasoning concerning matters of fact are founded on the relation of cause and effect, we are able to use the experiences of past events in order to make inferences that allow us to predict future events. In the section Skeptical Doubts Concerning the Operations of Understanding, Hume doubts the role that reason plays in this process. Hume thinks all ideas are derived from previous experiences. He says, This proposition, that causes and effects are discoverable not by reason, but by experience. (338) If a person has never experienced a certain impression, they cannot have an idea concerning it. If they never tasted anything bitter before, then they cannot conceive the idea of bitterness. Any idea must be traceable back to an original impression, otherwise we cant understand what is meant by the idea. Hume suggests that without prior knowledge, it would be impossible to predict the future. No object ever discovers, by the qualities which appear to the senses, either the causes which produced it or the effects which will arise from it; nor can our reason, unassisted by experience, ever draw any inference concerning real existence and matter of fact. (338). Hume proves that knowledge based on cause and effect relies only on experience and cann ...

Urban Planning In China - Research Paper Example Transportation challenges drive the China’s urban transport policy. The local authorities in, therefore, localize this system to manage transportation crisis in particular cities. Beijing is the capital city of China, business, and transportation hub. It has a sophisticated transport system comprising of the road, air, and bicycle railroads. The city also has a large population living with many registered cars on the roads. The result is widespread traffic congestion in the city. Usually, the city is gridlocked, and the situation seems to be on the rise (Wang, Zhang, Cao & Liu, 2012). Traffic problems in Beijing result from rapid urbanization, increasing inhabitant earnings and the national policy that encourages automobile ownership among the citizens as a strategy for promoting economic growth. These complications lead to serious problems affecting urban growth, quality of urban life and the overall economic development, for instance, longer time in commuting. Hence, the gov ernment through the relevant authorities works to combat the congestion and provide better transportation systems for the city.  The Beijing Municipal Committee of Transportation performs most of the planning and implementation of transportation interventions. If Posion Gas Can Go, Why not Nukes By James Carroll Essay

If Posion Gas Can Go, Why not Nukes By James Carroll - Essay Example Same patterns prevail today and it is just as difficult to ban the use of nuclear weapons as it was in the past. In the third paragraph, the author says that people hold different opinions on whether chemical weapons should be banned or not. However, the contradiction is only apparent. Actually, no one would keep from using chemical weapons in a war. In the past, the chemical weapon has proved very powerful. Therefore many countries acquired it and used it as required. However, because of the massive destruction to life and property as a result of its use, people have started to consider banning chemical weapon. In the fourth paragraph, the author expresses that there has been peace for a while since the peoples concern about aborting the use of chemical weapons, and no or very little use of chemical weapons has been made. After the World War I, the movement to ban chemical weapon resumed. The poison gas was outlawed by the Geneva Convention. That was similar to banning chemical weapon. However, in the World War II, most countries used chemical weapon once again. In the fifth paragraph, the author highlights how the use of nuclear weapon widened considerably after the World War II. Technologically advanced countries began to possess their own bombs. The mushroom cloud became a real nightmare. Consequently, no one used chemical weapon anymore, as all proceeded to make nuclear weapon and the situation worsened further. The author puts forward an excellent example to explain why it is nearly impossible to abandon nuclear weapon today, just like it was to relinquish chemical weapon in the past. He has presented a lot of facts and statistics to make the whole argument valid through reliable data. The author has maintained a moderate tone throughout the article. He narrates a story in which he tried to present the chemical weapon as an example. With the passage of time, people
